Body Parts


Lesson Plan                                                                                                                     Week of: ­­­ February 4-8
THEME: Body Parts
GOALS:
·         Language
o   Recognize and trace “E”
o   Children will independently go to their circle time seat
o   Children will sit at their circle time seat for 30 seconds
o   Recognize first letter of their name
o   Recognize and say their vocab words
o   Recognize the colors red, blue, green, and yellow
·         Self-Help Skills
o   Learn how to use cup without lid, even with spilling
o   Use fork/spoon at least twice during the week
o   Actively recognize when it’s clean-up time, and independently put away toys
o   Recognize when it is time to take off and put on jacket
·         Cognitive
o   Participate in hand motions during songs
o   Sit on spot during story time
o   Recognize when to say please
o   Recognize following body parts, eyes, ears, mouth, nose, toes, and belly

Opening (circle time):

And these are my hips. (place hands on hips)
This is my back, (pat back)
And these are my lips. (shush lips)
This is my leg, (tap leg)
And my eyes help me see. (point to eyes)

Tuesday Activity- Our Face
PREPARATION
Get a small mirror (preferably a non-breakable, mylar) for each child. 
ACTIVITY
Talk to the students about their differences.  Have them look in the mirror and watch themselves point to their facial features (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc).  Name different attributes that individual children have (____ has yellow hair).  Repeat with different attributes, like hair color, height, color of clothing, eye color, length of hair, gender, etc.  Talk to them about how we’re all different and it’s ok to be different.  BE POSITIVE!

Thursday Activity- Fingers and Toes
PREPARATION
Print a hand with fingers spread out.  Write the numbers 1-5 on each finger. 
ACTIVITY
Talk to the children about their fingers and toes.  Have them count on one hand with you.  Make sure that you hold each finger up as you count 1-5. 
·         Music and Finger plays: Five fingers

I have five little fingers, (hold up ten fingers)
And they all belong to me. (put hands together on chest)
I can make them do great things. (make hands do a variety of movements)
Would you like to see? (touch index fingers to eyes)
I can shut them up so tight, (make fists)
Or open them really wide. (stretch fingers out wide)
I can put them with the others, (place palm to palm)
And fold them up just so. (bring folded hands to lap)
Friday Activity- All of Me
PREPARATION
Make a large dice with body parts on it.
ACTIVITY
Have each child take a turn rolling the dice.  Whichever body part the dice lands on the child has to touch!
Music and Finger plays: Me Complete
I have ten little fingers and ten little toes
Two little arms and one little nose,
One little mouth and two little ears,
Two little eyes for smiles and tears,
One little head and two little feet,
One little chin, that's me complete

·         Read-Aloud Story:  *LIST BELOW, Find one at library for the week (You can read both a shape and color book each day or alternate)

Bandage the Bear/Baby
Set out a teddy bear/baby along with strips of gauze or white cloth. Give your children directions for using the strips to bandage different parts of the bear's body. Or let the children give you directions for bandaging the bear.

Have a sensory box with a small bit of sand at the bottom of it.  Make the sand wet.  Have the children make handprints and even footprints in the box.  Provide shovels and things for them to play with in the sand

Have a shallow dish ready with a small amount of paint.  Have children put their hands/feet in the paint and place them on paper to make a flower.

Magazine Face
Invite your children to glue facial features cut from magazine pictures on paper plates to create faces. Provide yarn for hair.  Talk to the children about each facial feature.  Talk to them about where to place each feature.

Handprints
Help each child to trace their own handprint.  Make sure that they try to do the best on their own (children this small WILL have a harder time).  Help them to write the FIRST letter of their name at the top of the page.  Have them color the page.

Give each child a piece of paper.  Have them paint with their noses.  If there is a child who doesn’t want to paint with their nose, have them use their fingers, or elbows, or chin.  Make sure to take pictures to show parents.

Mini Face Pizzas
Give each child half of an English muffin.  Help them to spread sauce on the muffin.  They can then add cheese, pepperoni, olives, etc to make a face. Adapt idea below:

Body Part Musical Squares
Put one square on the floor for each child. Place the squares randomly throughout the room. The game begins with each child standing on a square. Start playing music and have the children move around the room in a way that you state (crawl, walk backwards, hop, etc.). When the music stops the children must return to their square and touch a body part (Knee, Elbow, Foot, etc.) that you yell out.

Alternate Activities

Feet Freeze
Have each child trace their feet(of course, you need to help them). Then cut out the feet, and tape them in a line throughout the classroom. Play some music and have the children walk around stepping on the various feet. You can play freeze this way.

Two little hands go clap,clap, clap
One little boy turns around
