  • Read-Aloud Story:  *LIST BELOW, Find one at library for the week

Activity- Sorting
PREPARATION
White board (or large paper) to draw a sky, land, and water on.  Laminated cut-outs of transportation vehicles (car, train, bus, plane, ship, bike, etc.)
ACTIVITY
Show the board (paper). Teach them spatial relationship words by explaining that the sky is on the TOP, the BOTTOM is the road or ground and the SIDE (add some blue for water to the side) is the water.
Give each child a flannel piece. Take turns asking what item they have and invite them to place their piece on the board where it would travel. Ask them "Would your airplane go in the air on TOP, on the ground in the MIDDLE or in the water on the SIDE?

  • Music and Finger plays: Vroom Vroom (sung to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Beep-Beep! Honk-Honk little car,
How I wonder where you are.
Driving down the streets all day,
Stop , then go – you never stay.
Beep-Beep! Honk-Honk little car,
How I wonder where you are.

Toot-Toot! Toot-Toot little boat
I wonder how you stay afloat
In the water you must stay
When it’s night and when it’s day.
Toot-Toot! Toot-Toot little boat
I wonder how you stay afloat

Vroom- Vroom! Zoom-Zoom little plane
In the sky just like the rain.
Up above the world so high,
Like a bird that’s in the sky.
Vroom- Vroom! Zoom-Zoom little plane
In the sky just like the rain.

Cho-cho! Cho-cho little train
Start and stop and start again.
Going faster everyday
Round and round and round the bay.
Cho-cho! Cho-cho little train
Start and stop and start again.

Activity- Let’s Move!
PREPARATION
Laminated cut-outs of transportation vehicles (car, train, bus, plane, ship, bike, etc.)
ACTIVITY
Ask the children to all stand up. Tell them you are going to show them different modes of transportation and when you do, they should move like that item. Encourage them to also make the sound that goes with it! Be sure to join in the fun to model this. Example: "Yes! It's an airplane! Let's move like airplanes! Let me hear your best airplane noise! Are they loud or quiet?"

Tire Painting
Let 'em roll! Try to choose vehicles that have different textured and sized wheels. They make great design discussions as the children roll the cars from the paint trays to their papers!

Sponge Paint Trains
Provide rectangle sponges and different colors of paint.  Have children make a “pattern” of rectangles to make the cars of the train.  When the paint is dry help them draw the rest of the train and the track.  If you want you can even have the children use wagon wheel pasta to stamp the wheels on.

Fingerprint Airplane Books
Set out washable inkpads. Give each of your children five small index cards numbered from 1 to 5. Invite the children to stamp matching numbers of fingerprints on their cards for airplane bodies and add wings with crayons. When they have finished, help them stack their cards in numerical order and staple them together to make counting books.

Pretzel Wheels
Print and laminate picture of a spoke wheel as a guide for children.  Follow this recipe to make pretzel wheels: 1 pkg yeast, 1 teas sugar, 1 teas salt, 1 ½ cups warm water, 4 cups flour, 1 egg, separated.  Dissolve yeast in warm water.  Then add the other ingredients (except the egg) and mix until the dough forms a ball.  Knead until smooth on a floured surface.  Pull off a ball the size of a walnut. Help children roll into a snake and shape like a circle to place on their wheel paper.  Roll out other small straight pieces to make spokes.  Separate an egg and beat the egg white.  Place the wheels on a greased cookie sheet.  Brush with egg white and sprinkle with kosher salt.  Bake at 425O F for 12 to 15 minutes and then let cool on a rack.

TH
Fly or Stop
Tell the children to pretend to be airplanes flying around the room (spread arms and move smoothly around area).  Play music as they’re “flying.”  Every time the music stops their plans have to “land.”  When the music starts again they can “take-off.”

F
Red Light, Green Light
A slight twist to the classic game.  Cut out a red and green circle.  Attach the circles to short sticks.  From that point play it like a classic game, when you hold up the green circle the children walk towards you, when you hold up the red they must stop.
